Bollywood Hit Movies of 2017 So Far

From heart-wrenching romantic flicks to a sequel to blockbuster Baahubali, 2017 was full of cinematic surprises that had viewers wanting more. We have sliced and diced this year’s bumper crop of Bollywood movies and narrowed it down to the top six.

Baahubali: The Conclusion (Hindi)

A sequel to ‘Baahubali: The Beginning’ released in 2015, Baahubali: The Conclusion is the highest grosser of the year and the first ever Indian film to gross over Rs.1,000 crores at the box office across multiple languages. One of the most awaited Bollywood movies, The Conclusion meticulously linked to the events of the previous movie and provides a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to the mythological saga. The film stars Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati and Sathyaraj in lead roles and received positive reviews from critics and audience.

A relatively low-budget movie by Bollywood standards, this movie revolves around a blind man seeking revenge against a corrupt politician and his brother after his wife is raped and murdered. The first super-hit of 2017, this new Hindi movie features Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam in lead roles.  With mixed reviews from the critics, the film still managed to mint Rs. 103.84 crores and cashed in on the positive word of mouth.

Despite releasing on the same date as Kaabil, this movie still managed to rake in some moolah. However, it still fell below expectations and could manage collections just in excess of 130 crores despite having a stellar star cast comprising of Shahrukh Khan, Mahira Khan and Nawajuddin Siddiqui in lead roles. Essentially a crime thriller, this movie revolves around how a bootlegger managed to evade authorities running a clever liquor business despite the prohibition of alcohol in Gujarat.

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha

When it comes to Hindi movies, Akshay Kumar has a fan following of his own and Toilet: Ek Prem Katha lays testimony to that. A critically acclaimed film, this film highlights an unconventional love story and stresses on the issue of open defecation in India with Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in lead roles. The movie managed to mint in excess of 80 crores and is Kumar’s second hit of the year.

Jolly LLB 2

Another sequel on this list, Jolly LLB 2 involves a courtroom drama featuring Akshay Kumar, Huma Qureshi, Saurabh Shukla and Annu Kapoor. With a total collection of Rs 117 crore, the film wasn’t as entertaining as the previous one but still managed to make four times what the first film made.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania

Directed by Shashank Khaitan and produced by Karan Johar, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt managed to win audiences over yet again with their third successive hit. A cute love story that carries a great social message, both actors managed to deliver excellent performances in this light, romantic film. It is one of the few Bollywood movies applauded by the critics and audiences alike. The music also played a decisive factor in determining the movie’s overall box-office success.
